The Gimli base was being used as a racetrack. First Officer Maurice Quintal had once been stationed at the Royal Canadian Air Force base at Gimli and was familiar with the landing strips.īut abandoned is a loose term, it was used, just not at the time for flying: Robert Pearson, was an experienced glider pilot (he co-owned a Blanik L-13 sailplane). Air Canada flight 143 was saved by a series of lucky breaks. The plane began to run out of gas near Red Lake, Ont., 225 kilometers from Gimli, Man. Amazingly, the powerless plane made a successful emergency landing at an abandoned airbase in Gimli, Man. The pilot of the plane quickly began treating the large plane as a glider, which was a hobby of his. The 120-tonne, $40-million plane, began dropping at over 600 meters per minute with no hope of reaching the closest city and international airport, Winnipeg. Twelve kilometers above the Manitoba countryside, the unthinkable happened, the 767 ran out of fuel. But on this summer day passengers were in for a unscheduled stop. ![]() It was a flight from Toronto to Edmonton on a brand new Air Canada Boeing 767. On July 23, 1983, the worst fear of anyone who has traveled by plane, came true for 60 passengers on a Boeing 767. A new condo will not add to the fun, or economy of the town. Gimli is much nicer but has not caught on the same. Grand Beach is always packed with sun seekers from the city. Which means once kids are not forced to come out with their parents they will stop coming which means a decline in tourism. The more elderly that live in the town, the less activities for young people. What they town needs to use that money for is to build new complexes of entertainment or something special like a northern aquarium that could draw more tourists. But all a new condo will do is attract more older people. And a new complex will give the town a more modern look. Now the town needs nicer looking buildings as so many of the houses have become run down. ![]() SO what are they doing instead, building up condos. There is no real large industry, besides a Diageo Distillery to keep young families in the area. Because of the peace and economics, it is beginning to turn into a retirement community. Gimli is a beautiful beach town, and only a 45 minute drive to the Capitol City of Winnipeg.
